  • Description : Approaching Heavitree Gap, we can see that the track is less than it should be! Hence the extensive 25 and 15 kph spreed restrictions on the narrow guage Ghan. The modern standard gauge has eliminated all this.

  • Description : Crossing the Simpson desert, the only break in the monootony is the regular passing of telegraph poles. The shininess of the rails belies the apparently otherwise unused state of the track!

    Another view of the Simpson Desert. This time the monotony is broken by a shallow watercourse, crossing the track at right angles in the middle distance. The track crosses the watercourse on the level, that is, it dips into the valley, across the creek bed, then up the other side. (There is usually no water in these watercourses. When there is, the train doesn't run!)
    When crossing one of the larger watercourses, our train couldn't get up the other side. The driver simply reversed back as far as possible, then pulled full throttle! We rattled up the other side, rocking and rolling as tho' there were waves of water coming down the watercourse!

In the corner, Vic Isaacs chats with Ian Reynolds (facing camera), while David Cranney admires the view. All were ARHS ACT Divn members checking out one of the last narrow gauge Ghan trips.

The train stops at Cook, and passengers are relieved to be allowed off the train to stretch their legs and gaze in awe and wonder at the few trees in Cook (no, it wasn't a plane tree!), and also to relieve the monotonous, but not treeless, state of the resident(s) of Cook.
